A commitment to sustainable business practices

As part of their sustainability strategy and greening programme, Ambius successfully gained Planet Positive status for its businesses in North America and UK. Planet Positive has implemented two behaviour change programmes which focus on delivering energy efficiencies and carbon reductions in fleet emissions and building energy. Planet Positive is also partnering with Ambius to offer certification and sustainability engagement to their suppliers and customers.

"Planet Positive certification signifies our high standard of environmental achievement that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and take a more positive attitude towards climate change. We have long recognised and promoted the environmental benefits of the services we offer, especially the use of interior plants, but these benefits are compromised by our own practices if we don't manage the business in a sustainable fashion."

4-Step Process

Measure

Ambius’ carbon footprint for their UK, North America and Pacific regions in 2009 was calculated at 20,894 t/CO2e. During 2010, Ambius will also measure the carbon footprint of their businesses in continental Europe and South Africa.

Reduce

Ambius has adopted a long-term plan to reduce their carbon footprint. During 2010, a number of strategies have been set to reduce Ambius’ vehicle fleet fuel consumption and building energy consumption by around 10-15%. This is being achieved through a range of behaviour change materials which aim to engage and enthuse employees.

i) Behaviour Change

The Green Driving World Championships and the Green Office Challenge programmes have been implemented. With incentives being offered for efficient branches, the programmes provide a competitive format on which to reduce carbon emissions and costs. Using the Planet Positive data entry sheet, league tables, results and tips are provided to employees on a regular basis.

ii) Staff Engagement

Planet Positive have provided Ambius with a staff engagement programme based on research carried out by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). This programme analyses the attitudinal types of employees and provides targeted engagement plans for each behavioural type.

Invest

As part of the Act contribution Ambius made a substantial donation to Cool Earth which will protect approximately 90 acres of vulnerable rainforest from destruction. Not only does this help in battle against climate change, it also protects fragile habitats and eco-systems and encourages greater biodiversity. Cool Earth was supported mainly because many of the cultivated plants that are used by Ambius trace their ancestry and origins to these
